Problem

If a particle moves from the origin O(0,0,0) to the point A(4,5,6), what is the position vector of A?

Solution

Step 1 :The position vector of a point A(x,y,z) is given by \(\overrightarrow{OA} = x\mathbf{i} + y\mathbf{j} + z\mathbf{k}\) where \(\mathbf{i}, \mathbf{j}, \mathbf{k}\) are the unit vectors along the x, y and z axes respectively.

Step 2 :Substituting the given coordinates of A into the formula, we get \(\overrightarrow{OA} = 4\mathbf{i} + 5\mathbf{j} + 6\mathbf{k}\)
