Problem

A store sells gravel in small bags and large bags. The small bags have 6 pounds of gravel for \( \$ 35.88 \) and the large bags have 15 pounds of gravel for \( \$ 81.75 \). Part A Write a ratio of price to pounds for each bag. \( 35.88: 6 \) and \( 81.25: 15 \) Write an equivalent fraction that gives the unit rate of price per pound for each bag. Part B Part C Which type of bag is the better buy? Explain.

Solution

Step 1 :\(\frac{35.88}{6} = 5.98\)

Step 2 :\(\frac{81.75}{15} = 5.45\)

Step 3 :Compare 5.98 and 5.45, 5.45 is smaller, small bag is the better buy.
